Elementary Modernization

The Scottsbluff Public Schools Board of Education approved the Elementary Modernization project at the January 2021 board meeting. Using funds budgeted from the District's depreciation and building funds set aside for this purpose, the District will allocate 350-425K for each in-town elementary school. This project does not require a bond and will have no impact on Scottsbluff taxpayers. Currently, Scottsbluff Public Schools has 5 elementary schools that serve over 1300 students in grades K-5. The average age of a Scottsbluff elementary school is 77 years old.

The mission of the project is; In a fiscally prudent, systemic and future-focused manner, to improve the quality of teaching and learning for students and staff at SBPS elementary schools. This will be accomplished through a well planned, phased modernization (annually by school) that will serve to enhance the safety, functionality, adaptability, comfort, and aesthetics of each facility.

The District Facilities and Maintenance team conducted an assessment of all elementary schools in order to provide data on current learning environment conditions. A Committee of teachers, elementary administration, special education staff, library media specialists and others met to prioritize needs and make project recommendations with the following considerations:

  • Classrooms designed for flexibility and future instructional needs
  • Integration of technology
  • Safe, secure learning environments
  • Welcoming Environment for students, parents and community
  • Efficient, pleasant working environment for staff

While the project will make upgrades to the learning environment throughout the school, the main area of focus is the classroom where design goals include:

  • Create a welcoming environment.
  • Furnishings that are mobile, multiuse and fit the size of the learner.
  • Seamlessly integrating technology.
  • Easily reorganized to adapt to learning needs.
  • Supports a variety of learning styles and teaching methods.
  • Promotes a culture of inquiry and collaboration.
